Some of our older items coming out of molds
Casting some of our older past mugs and pitchers. Two of my favorite pitchers, the bubba pitcher and a nice traditional medium size pitcher.

Only one had holes so I used a ceramic tile drill bit and it was super easy. Kinda weird and creepy but covered up several holes. Much better than filling the holes the boring way.

greenware pedestal and coco pot
Two more items that have been slip cast. At this point the pieces are called greenware .
Greenware is is very fragile at this point. They will be cleaned and smoothed and painted then fired.
We fire our first firing a 03 about 1960 to 1988 Fahrenheit. Then they will be glazed and fired for the second time.
Unlike the method I used here, the cake pedestal on the left will be first done in two pieces and joined in the second firing with glaze.
The reason for this is this is a thicker top and has a tendancy to crack in the last firing when pre-joined.
The coco pot on the right is drying with the lid in. Without the lid it has a tendancy to shrink to much for the lid to fit properly later.

cake pedestals
Here are two of the pedestals that were finally dry enough to remove from the molds they were sitting in after I attached them a couple days ago.
Although they were cast on the 15th and put together on the 16th, they still have a lot of drying to do. The moist air and snow are slowing the drying times but that is a good thing as in the summer they tend to crack from drying too fast.

Slip casting table at Expressly Yours studio
Got the slip casting table going again. It is very easy to neglect. Slip is a liquid type clay that we pump into ceramic molds.
It gets dried out fairly quickly when I forget about it for more than 3 or 4 days. I think my camera may have got dusty or I have wrong setting as my photos look a tad blurry.

Here I’m casting and have cast one of our old style cutout out or banded bowls (it needs to be poured out in about 30 minutes so I’m hurrying .) A baby cake plate and pedestal base. A large pedestal top and a skinny butter dish.

Here on this side is a tall pedestal base, round cookie jar, medium size pedestal base, some cool cabinet handles and a awesome way platter that I’ll attach to the large pedestal base below.

large pedestal base for the wavy platter.
I’m off to go dump my molds. No worries I’ll take more photos tomorrow at they get removed from the molds and as I build the cake pedestals.
There is also a album if your interested in a more detailed showing of slip mold casting here.

Finally over my cold so it is time to start posting some new photos. It has been so long since my last post I took one photo to post right away.
